Ways to be Greener at Home

It’s Earth Week so it is a great opportunity to be environmentally friendly and conscious of our actions. Earth Day Network promotes going green and green economic policies while working with over 22,000 partners and organizations in 192 countries. Here are some ways that you can contribute to making this planet a greener environment.

 

Turn off and unplug electronics and appliances when not in use
 

Use recycled products

 

Use washable dishes/silverware instead of plastic ware

 

Use reusable water bottles and coffee mugs

 

Use nontoxic cleaning products

 

Buy locally and organic

 

Replace light bulbs with LED lights

 

Plant your own vegetable and herb garden

 

Instead of using plastic shopping bags bring your own canvas bags to the supermarket

 

Turn light off when you exit a room

 

Walk or ride a bicycle to run errands

 

Carpool with friends

 

Use cold water to wash clothes instead of warm

 

Line dry your laundry

 

Take shorter showers to reduce water use

 

Donate or recycle gently used items that you no longer need

 

Conduct an energy audit on your house and learn how you can save money on your utility bills

 

Fix any leaky faucets in order to lessen water consumption

 

Use products with the Energy Star label because they use up to 30% less energy than the average appliance

 

Turn your water heater temperature down to 120 degrees
