Raisins- Love or Hate?

One of the most frequent questions I hear from customers is “do you have any muesli without raisins?” Fortunately the answer is yes- Antioxidant and Super Muesli.  Having heard this question frequently, I wasn’t surprised to find raisins on the list of America’s Least Favorite Foods, nestled in at #15, right behind peas.

There are many people out there, however, who love raisins.  Besides simply being naturally sweet, they carry many of the same great health benefits of grapes and wine.  Here are several reasons why raisins are good for you.

Antioxidant Protection from Phenols– Raisins are rich flavonols, with help prevent oxidative damage to your body.  Oxidative damage can be caused by everything from exercise to sun exposure so it is important to reduce it as much as possible.

Dental Health– Despite the sugars it contains, raisins can improve dental health.  Raisins contain oleanolic acid which inhibits the growth of several oral bacteria.  Raisins are also rich in boron, a micronutrient that aids bones in the absorbition of calcium.  This is likely why some swear by gin-soaked raisins as a treatment for arthritis.

Increased Libido– Raisins are rich in Arginine, an amino acid that can stimulate libido and increase sexual arousal.  I don’t think it’s necessary to elaborate on the potential benefits from this.

Mineral Rich– Raisins are a great source of Iron, Magnesium, and Potassium.  These essential minerals have many benefits including treatment of anemia, hair loss, heart disease, and reducing blood acidity.

So what’s your stance on raisins- love or hate?
